Moerdijk village faces destruction over Dutch clean energy project

The Dutch village of Moerdijk faces potential destruction due to a large-scale clean energy transition project. Located strategically between the ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp, the village is considered an ideal site for energy production, but residents fear the project will result in the community being leveled.

Local residents, represented by a collective coordinated by Pim Meijer, have expressed anger and distrust toward the national government. Many families who have lived in the area for generations are reportedly leaving due to the ongoing uncertainty. Mayor Aart-Jan Moerkerke has voiced the community's frustration regarding the lack of clarity from national authorities concerning the exact scale of the project and the future of the citizens.

Patrick Witte, an associate professor of spatial planning, noted that while reducing the project's scale might allow the village to survive, Moerdijk would still be physically constrained between the energy plants, the port, and the highway.
