Moerdijk village may stay as Dutch authorities explore alternative Powerport expansion scenario

The Dutch national and regional governments are examining a third scenario for the Powerport Moerdijk harbour and industry expansion that would keep the village of Moerdijk intact, alongside previously considered eastern and south‑eastern options. The parties have also signed an intent agreement for the "Amervisie" plan, aimed at turning the Amer area into an international energy hub for South‑Netherlands while safeguarding housing, nature, landscape and water safety.

In the Tweede Kamer, members approved a motion to create a special fund to guarantee the village’s livability, provide compensation for residents who suffer financial loss, and establish a regional fund for broad prosperity. The chamber also urged that no new space claims be made in the area until at least 2050. Staatssecretaris Jo‑Annes de Bat remarked that the handling of the Moerdijk case had "been far from good, it must be different and better."

The existing Moerdijk regulation, which secures residents the full assessed and indexed value of their property, will remain in place until a preferred scenario is selected, with rights retained through 2027. Authorities will review the situation each year, involving residents, entrepreneurs and farmers in the decision‑making process.
