Moers' Homberger Street sees spate of burglaries

Police in the Kreis Wesel district confirmed that overall crime statistics for Homberger Street in Moers have remained stable over the past five years. However, a series of six burglaries and thefts were recorded between April and May 2026, affecting establishments such as Diebels tavern, Dolomiti ice‑cream shop, City‑Frischmarkt, Mira restaurant, Subway, a 24‑hour kiosk, and an Edeka branch. Police spokesperson Eric Gatermann noted that “the total number of offences on Homberger Street in the quarterly comparisons (Q1 and Q2) in 2026 is lower than in 2025,” and that the recent uptick appears to be a temporary increase rather than a lasting trend.

The incidents have raised concerns among local residents, some of whom describe the area as an “Angstraum” (area of fear). Authorities emphasized that no sustained pattern of crime has been identified and that the recent burglaries do not indicate a new crime hotspot.
