Moeve begins construction of Onuba green hydrogen plant in Huelva
Moeve has officially commenced construction of Onuba, the first phase of the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley, located in Palos de la Frontera, Huelva. This large-scale industrial project represents a joint investment exceeding 1,000 million euros, which includes associated infrastructure and a photovoltaic plant for self-consumption.
The Onuba facility will initially feature an electrolysis capacity of 300 MW, with the potential to expand by an additional 105 MW. The plant is expected to produce approximately 45,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually, a process estimated to prevent 250,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year. The hydrogen produced is intended for industrial decarbonization and the creation of sustainable fuels for the heavy transport, aviation, and maritime sectors.
Moeve holds a 51% majority stake in the project. Strategic partners include Hy24, a global hydrogen-specialized fund, and the Spanish public-private institution COFIDES, which together hold a 29% stake. The remaining 20% is held by Enagás Renovable (16%) and Alter Enersun (4%). The project has received 304 million euros in funding through the NextGenerationEU recovery plan.
Operational activities are scheduled to begin in 2029. The project is estimated to generate over 8,000 direct and indirect jobs and will support more than 400 local SMEs and self-employed workers.
