Mogadishu 1993: Investigation into deaths of Italian paratroopers

An investigation is examining the circumstances surrounding the deaths of Italian military personnel in Somalia between 1993 and 1994, focusing on an incident in Mogadishu on September 15, 1993.

At approximately 7:20 PM that evening, four Italian paratroopers from the Folgore Brigade were walking along the north pier of the new port in Mogadishu while off duty. During the incident, Corporal Giorgio Righetti was killed on the spot, and Corporal Rossano Visioli died while being transported by helicopter to a hospital. Two other soldiers, Nicola Sforza and Christian Baldassin, survived the attack.

The investigation highlights that the soldiers involved were young conscripts born in 1973 who had volunteered to extend their service to participate in the mission. The report also notes that certain documents related to these events remain inaccessible more than thirty years later.
