Mogadishu launches resettlement plan for 1,000 displaced families
The Banadir Regional Administration has launched the first phase of a resettlement programme in Mogadishu to accommodate over 1,000 families displaced by urban redevelopment. During an inspection of a site in the Gubadley district, Mayor and Banadir Governor Hassan Mohamed Hussein Muungaab announced that 1,058 families would be relocated to the new area.
The planned settlement is intended to provide essential services and infrastructure, including clean water, electricity, a mosque, a health centre, a market, and a public school. The initiative aims to provide a more organized residential environment for those affected by road construction and the reorganization of informal settlements.
The programme follows calls from the Union of Somali Ulema Councils for the federal government to protect citizens' property rights. The council cited numerous complaints regarding land disputes, demolitions, and forced evictions. While critics have accused officials of facilitating land grabs, authorities maintain that clearance operations are necessary to reclaim public land and implement essential urban planning projects.
