Mogoșești City Hall investigation reveals widespread nepotism in Iași
An investigation by Reporter de Iași has uncovered extensive family connections within the administration of Mogoșești, a commune in Iași County, Romania. Out of 30 employees at the Mogoșești City Hall, 16 are reportedly relatives of one another or of local elected officials. When including the mayor, four local councilors, and the son of one councilor, the number of connected individuals rises to 22.
Key figures identified in the report include PSD Mayor Ionel Baraboi and General Secretary Mariana Anton. The mayor’s wife, Lenuța Baraboi, works as a social assistance inspector, a role the investigation claims she lacks specialized studies for. The mayor’s son, Florin-Paul Baraboi, works in the taxes and duties department and received a promotion in May during his father’s mandate.
The report also highlights connections involving former mayor Ștefan Maftei, whose relatives hold positions in civil status and the agricultural register. Additionally, the investigation notes irregularities such as job competitions with only single candidates, rapid promotions, and the fact that none of these connected employees were affected by government-mandated staff reductions.
