Mogol celebrates 90th birthday after selling 523 million records
Renowned Italian lyricist Giulio Rapetti, known professionally as Mogol, is celebrating his 90th birthday. Over a career spanning more than six decades, he has become one of the most successful songwriters in history, with 523 million records sold—a figure that places him third globally behind Elvis Presley and the Beatles.
Mogol has authored 1,776 songs registered with SIAE. His career is defined by legendary collaborations, most notably with Lucio Battisti. Together, they composed 113 songs across 14 albums, producing iconic tracks such as ‘Emozioni’, ‘Il mio canto libero’, and ‘La canzone del sole’.
Beyond his work with Battisti, Mogol has written for numerous iconic artists including Mina, Cocciante, Dalla, and Morandi. His early career included winning the Sanremo Festival in 1961 with ‘Al di là’ and translating works by Bob Dylan. His musical legacy is built on a profound ability to transform human emotions into verse, fundamentally shaping the landscape of Italian popular music.
