Mohamed Aqtar Ali threatens legal action over defamatory claims

Mohamed Aqtar Ali, brother of President Irfaan Ali, has demanded the immediate withdrawal of allegedly defamatory statements made by Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed. Through attorney Kashir A. Khan, Ali issued a warning that legal action may follow if the remarks are not retracted.

The dispute stems from a video posted to the Team Mohamed Facebook account, in which Mohamed made allegations regarding Ali’s connection to Sigma Engineering Ltd Inc. The claims included suggestions of involvement with the company and access to land. Ali’s legal counsel stated that the allegations are “calumnious, unsubstantiated and defamatory in their entirety,” noting that Ali is neither a director nor a shareholder in the company.

Sigma Engineering Ltd Inc, which is registered in both Guyana and Bangladesh, clarified that while Ali serves as a senior technical consultant, he has no affiliation with the company’s Bangladesh operations. The firm also indicated it would pursue legal action against Mohamed. In response to the demand for retraction, the Opposition Leader stated, “I will not withdraw,” asserting his commitment to serving the public without fear or favor.
