Mohamed family raises concerns over fair trial in Guyana
Businessman Nazar Mohamed has raised concerns regarding the impartiality of ongoing legal proceedings in Guyana involving himself and his son, Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed. Nazar Mohamed argued that his family has faced a sustained mobilization of state resources, media platforms, and political power over the last two years, specifically citing the impact of his son’s entry into politics.
The concerns follow reports of a U.S. visa review for High Court Justice Gino Persaud and allegations linking Azruddin Mohamed to Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. FARA filings indicate that the Government of Guyana utilized a U.S. lobbying firm to transmit messages regarding these alleged links to the office of U.S. Congressman Carlos Gimenez.
During an extradition hearing, defense lawyers argued that a press statement issued by the Guyana Police Force on September 12, 2026, mischaracterized evidence and attempted to pervert the course of justice by prejudicing public and judicial opinion. Chief Magistrate Judy Latchman rejected the defense's concerns, stating she ignores media and social media to focus solely on evidence presented within the courtroom.
