Malaysia launches National Defence Literacy Programme
Malaysia's Ministry of Defence has launched the National Defence Literacy Programme to enhance public awareness regarding national security, sovereignty, and the concept of Total Defence (HANRUH). Launched at the Sabah International Convention Centre by Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, the initiative aims to educate citizens on their role in national protection, moving beyond the idea that defense is solely the responsibility of the Malaysian Armed Forces.
Khaled emphasized that modern threats have evolved to include non-conventional challenges such as cyberattacks, climate change, and disasters. He noted that building public resilience is essential for credible deterrence.
The Minister also highlighted the need to strengthen defense positioning in Sabah due to regional developments in the South China Sea and military competition between major powers. While acknowledging the right of neighboring countries like the Philippines to enhance their own defense capabilities, Khaled stressed that Malaysia must remain vigilant to prevent regional conflicts from impacting its territory.
