Mohamed Salah vows new start for Egyptian football after World Cup exit
Egypt were eliminated in the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup after leading Argentina 2‑0 before conceding three late goals. Three days later, captain Mohamed Salah used his X account to address the disappointment of fans, writing, “I know you are still disappointed, but I promise I will do everything in my power to make this a new opening for Egyptian football on the international stage.” He added that merely qualifying for the tournament and taking part is not enough and asked supporters to trust the squad. Salah, who has been without a club since leaving Liverpool, highlighted the team's responsibility to build on the performance, which was the best Egyptian World Cup result since 1934. The Egyptian Football Federation also lodged a formal protest with FIFA over several contested refereeing decisions in the match.
