Mohamed Soltan and ACMER fund Abdul El-Sayed Senate campaign

Federal Election Commission reports reveal that Mohamed Soltan, an Egyptian American activist, has provided financial support to Abdul El-Sayed’s U.S. Senate campaign in Michigan. Soltan, who serves as the president of the American Committee for Middle East Rights (ACMER), made individual contributions to the ‘Abdul for U.S. Senate’ committee in April.

Additionally, ACMER contributed $25,000 to the Fighting for Michigan PAC, a super PAC supporting El-Sayed, on June 12. Other ACMER officials, including Treasurer Muna Jondy and Executive Director Kristina Blyad, have also made contributions to El-Sayed’s campaign efforts through various committees and PACs.

Soltan was previously sentenced in absentia to life in prison by an Egyptian court in 2015 for his alleged support of the Muslim Brotherhood, an organization designated as a terrorist group by Egypt. Soltan was released in May 2015 following pressure from the Obama administration and subsequently returned to the United States, where he works as a human rights activist and international investment adviser.
