Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf visits Baghdad to strengthen Iran-Iraq ties

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf arrived in Baghdad for a three-day visit to strengthen bilateral ties with Iraq. The visit focuses on enhancing cooperation in security, economy, politics, and counterterrorism. Qalibaf emphasized the historic and inseparable bond between the Iranian and Iraqi peoples and stated that both nations would take practical steps toward shared security.

During the visit, Iraqi Parliament Speaker Haibat al Halbousi requested that Iraq be granted a 'special status' for oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz to protect its economic interests amidst regional instability. This comes as Iraq seeks to reduce its dependence on Persian Gulf maritime routes due to ongoing regional conflicts.

Qalibaf also addressed tensions with the United States, asserting that increased economic and military pressure would not force Tehran to accept concessions outside of existing agreements, such as the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding. He maintained that the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed until US commitments, including the lifting of naval blockades and oil sanctions, are fulfilled. The visit follows recent drone incidents near the Kurdistan Region's border and ongoing regional volatility.
