Mohammad Sharifullah, a member of the Islamic State affiliate ISIS-K, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison in a Virginia federal court. The sentence follows his April conviction for providing material support to the terrorist organization.

While a federal jury could not reach a unanimous decision regarding his direct responsibility for the August 26, 2021, suicide bombing at Kabul's Abbey Gate, prosecutors asserted that Sharifullah scouted the route to Hamid Karzai International Airport. The attack, which occurred during the U.S. military withdrawal from Afghanistan, resulted in the deaths of 13 U.S. service members and approximately 160 Afghans.

During the sentencing, U.S. District Judge Anthony Trenga described Sharifullah as a 'dedicated terrorist' who showed no remorse for the suffering caused by his actions. The proceedings included emotional victim impact statements from parents of the fallen U.S. service members.
