Mohammed Shami excluded from India squad and Bengal Ranji Trophy side
Veteran Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has been omitted from the national squads for the upcoming series against New Zealand, despite strong domestic performances. Shami, who was the leading wicket-taker in the 2023 ODI World Cup, has not featured for the national team since March 2025.
Adding to the controversy, Shami was also absent from Bengal’s playing XI for their Ranji Trophy match against Services in New Delhi. While some reports suggest the decision to rest him was made by Shami himself to manage fatigue following a heavy workload, others have raised questions regarding his fitness and the lack of transparency from selectors.
Former cricketer Mohammad Kaif has criticized the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for a lack of accountability and clarity regarding these selection decisions. While Shami continues to perform well in domestic cricket, including a five-wicket haul against Delhi, his exclusion from both the national tour and his state side has sparked significant debate regarding his future in international cricket.
