Mohammed Shami was left out of India's Test squad for the upcoming Sri Lanka series despite a strong domestic season in which he took 37 wickets in the Ranji Trophy and repeatedly asserted his fitness. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selectors have reportedly charted a 15‑fast‑bowler plan aimed at building a youthful pace battery for the next World Test Championship cycle and the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Jasprit Bumrah remains the senior spearhead of India's pace attack, but his workload will be carefully managed. The selectors intend to give emerging bowlers such as Mohammed Siraj and other young fast bowlers greater international exposure, signalling that Shami is not part of the long‑term strategy.
