Mohammed VI University Hospital performs first advanced atrial fibrillation ablations
The cardiology department at Mohammed VI University Hospital in Agadir has successfully performed its first atrial fibrillation ablation procedures using two advanced technologies: Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA) and Radiofrequency Ablation.
Atrial fibrillation is a common heart rhythm disorder. These procedures aim to restore regular heartbeats by electrically isolating the pulmonary veins, thereby reducing risks such as heart failure and thromboembolic complications.
The PFA technique is a modern, non-thermal method that uses high-intensity electrical fields to selectively target heart tissue. This approach can reduce procedure duration and minimize damage to adjacent structures like the esophagus and phrenic nerve. The radiofrequency technique remains a standard reference, utilizing thermal energy and 3D anatomical mapping to ensure precision during the intervention.
