Mohács commemorates 500 years since the 1526 battle

The 500th anniversary of the Battle of Mohács, fought on August 29, 1526, is being marked by various historical, political, and cultural commemorations. The battle, which saw the Ottoman Empire under Suleiman the Magnificent defeat the forces of King Louis II, remains a defining moment in Central European history, leading to the collapse of the medieval Hungarian Kingdom and the eventual rise of the Habsburgs.

Political leaders, including Prime Minister Péter Magyar, have used the anniversary to emphasize themes of national resilience and unity. Magyar stated that the message of Mohács is not one of defeat, but of the capacity to rise again after catastrophe. He called for national cohesion, noting that a small nation cannot afford internal division.

Religious and cultural figures have also participated. Cardinal Péter Erdő highlighted the themes of loyalty and sacrifice, while composer Péter Nógrádi created a musical cycle to honor the event. Additionally, the Hungarian National Bank and Hungarian Post issued commemorative coins and stamps to honor the fallen. In regions like Vojvodina, local historians held lectures to discuss the long-term impact of the Ottoman occupation on local communities.
