Mohsen Namjoo returns to Iran after 20 years in exile

Renowned Iranian musician Mohsen Namjoo has announced his return to Iran after approximately 20 years of living in exile, primarily in North America and Europe. In a video message, the experimental singer stated that being near his family, friends, and relatives has become more important than his international music career.

Namjoo’s return is notable due to his complex history with the Iranian government. In 2009, he was sentenced in absentia to five years in prison for allegedly insulting religious values through his musical interpretations. While he has previously offered subtle criticisms of the Islamic Republic, his return raises questions regarding his legal status and whether he can continue his artistic work freely.

The suddenness of the move has caused complications for his professional engagements. Digital Zone Canada, his North American concert organizer, reported they had lost contact with him for six days prior to the announcement, leading to the cancellation of scheduled performances in Toronto, Vancouver, Seattle, and California. Additionally, reports indicate his wife was not informed of the final decision regarding the trip.
