Moira Deeming joins Family First for Victorian election

Moira Deeming has announced she will contest the November 28 Victorian state election as the lead candidate for Family First in the Western Metropolitan Region. This move follows her departure from the Liberal Party in July.

Deeming was stripped of her Liberal endorsement following a dispute with fellow MP Matthew Guy. The conflict centered on an incident where Deeming accused Guy of placing her in a headlock; however, a Victoria Police investigation concluded that no offense was committed and that Guy had instead placed his hand on her shoulder. The Liberal Party had requested an apology from Deeming, which she refused, leading to her removal from the party and her subsequent resignation from the parliamentary Liberal Party room.

Deeming stated that while several other political parties had approached her, Family First was the best fit because its principles align with her views on issues such as child safeguards and sex-based rights. Family First national director Lyle Shelton described Deeming as “one of the most courageous parliamentarians in Aus”.
