Mojib Latif named honorary citizen of Schleswig-Holstein

Climate scientist Mojib Latif has been named an honorary citizen of Schleswig-Holstein, marking the first time a scientist has received this distinction from the northern German state.

Minister-President Daniel Günther presented the honor to the 71-year-old meteorologist, oceanographer, and professor during a ceremony at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research. Günther praised Latif as one of the most significant climate researchers of the modern era, noting his decades of work warning against the consequences of global warming and his ability to communicate complex scientific findings to the general public.

Latif has been active at GEOMAR and its predecessor institutes in Kiel since 2003. Following his retirement in 2020, he became a senior professor at Kiel University. He also serves as the president of the Academy of Sciences in Hamburg and the German Club of Rome.
