Mojib Latif warns of global water bankruptcy in new book

Meteorologist and climate researcher Mojib Latif, a professor at the University of Kiel and the Geomar Helmholtz Centre, has published a new book warning that water scarcity threatens human survival. He notes that freshwater is already becoming scarce in the Mediterranean region, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and parts of the United States. The United Nations has described the situation as the onset of an "age of global water bankruptcy".

Latif explains that rising consumption driven by climate change, population growth and wasteful use, combined with pollution such as chemical contaminants, oil spills and especially persistent micro‑plastics, is degrading water quality and ecosystems worldwide. He argues that without decisive action to protect freshwater resources, the basic foundation of life on Earth is at risk.
