Mojtaba Khamenei remains unseen six months after becoming Iran's Supreme Leader

Six months after airstrikes propelled a wounded Mojtaba Khamenei into the role of Iran’s Supreme Leader, he remains entirely unseen and unheard by the public. This absence has created a perceived leadership vacuum at the center of the country while Iran navigates a war that has destabilized the Middle East and damaged its fragile economy.

Iranian officials maintain that Khamenei remains in control, asserting that he is ruling from the shadows for security reasons as he recovers from disfiguring wounds. During this period, he has reportedly delegated broad daily authority to a group of top officials. Despite claims from President Masoud Pezeshkian regarding recent meetings, no photographs, videos, or audio messages have been released since his appointment.

This lack of visibility has fueled skepticism among the Iranian population. Alex Vatanka of the Middle East Institute noted that the central concern is no longer just whether Khamenei is alive, but whether Iran possesses a functioning Supreme Leader. Khamenei’s communication has been limited to written statements read by news broadcasters, and he was notably absent from recent funeral rites for his father.
