Mojtaba Khamenei, the new supreme leader of Iran, was reportedly rescued from the rubble of a Tehran hospital following airstrikes by the United States and Israel. Mohsen Heydari, a member of Iran’s Assembly of Experts, revealed in an interview with Qatari television that the 56-year-old Khamenei had been wounded during an initial strike on his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s compound in February. That attack killed the 86-year-old supreme leader and several top officials.

Heydari stated that allied forces subsequently bombed three hospitals in Tehran on February 28, and Mojtaba Khamenei was pulled from the wreckage of the third facility. Since his rescue, the new leader has not been seen or heard from in public, leading to speculation regarding his whereabouts and health. He is believed to be staying in a highly secure, undisclosed location, possibly a bunker or cave, using written messages delivered by couriers to maintain secrecy.

The transition of power occurred under extraordinary circumstances. The Assembly of Experts, the body responsible for selecting a successor, had its Qom Secretariat bombed, killing eight people and destroying official records. Consequently, members conducted a secret, improvised vote by writing names on paper before meeting in an undisclosed location. Mojtaba Khamenei was subsequently named the successor.
