Hungary rejects MOL-Naftogaz deal for Ukrainian oil storage

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar has rejected a memorandum signed between the Hungarian energy company MOL and Ukraine’s state-owned Naftogaz to build oil storage facilities in Hungary near the Ukrainian border.

The agreement, signed during the Carpathian Eight (C8) summit, was intended to create secure storage capacity for Ukrainian petroleum products to protect them from ongoing Russian strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. Naftogaz officials stated the project aims to diversify supply routes and ensure energy security.

However, Prime Minister Magyar criticized MOL for conducting these negotiations without the knowledge or consent of the current government. He asserted that the Tisza government will not allow such facilities to be built, noting that discussions reportedly began under the previous administration led by Viktor Orbán. Magyar also clarified that Hungary is not a member of the C8 group.

Opposition lawmakers and government officials have raised security concerns, arguing that such facilities could make Hungary a target for Russian attacks. MOL has indicated that any such large-scale investment would take several years to implement.
