Moldova 2024 census reveals rise in single-person and single-parent households

Data from the 2024 Population and Housing Census, published by the National Bureau of Statistics, reveals significant demographic shifts in the Republic of Moldova. Approximately one in three households (33%) consists of a single person, totaling roughly 334,000 households. This trend is most prominent in the northern regions, including Dondușeni, Briceni, and Ocnița.

Regarding family structures, nearly one in five households is headed by a single mother with children. Specifically, out of 682,400 registered family units, 121,300 (17.8%) are single mothers with children, whereas single fathers with children account for only 19,700 (2.9%) units. This indicates that the number of single mothers is more than six times higher than that of single fathers.

Other findings show that 42.4% of family units are couples with children, while 36.9% are couples without children. Urban areas, particularly Chișinău and Bălți, show a higher concentration of single-parent households compared to other regions.
