Moldova: 60% of municipalities opt for voluntary amalgamation

Approximately 60% of town halls in the Republic of Moldova have decided to participate in voluntary amalgamation. Roughly 500 municipalities have adopted final decisions regarding this administrative reform, which aims to consolidate local administrations to enable more ambitious development projects.

Government officials, including Secretary General Alexei Buzu, have stated that the process is intended to create stronger municipalities capable of attracting investments and improving infrastructure. To encourage participation, the government plans to offer tripled incentives for those completing the process.

Prime Minister Vasile Tofan and Minister of Infrastructure Vladimir Bolea have emphasized that the reform is necessary to transition rural areas from survival to development. Discussions with local mayors have focused on preparing funded projects and ensuring a greater share of economic revenue remains at the local level to stimulate business and community growth.
