Moldova advances judicial reform and anti‑corruption vetting ahead of EU accession

The "Europe starts in Chisinau" conference brought together prosecutors, high‑ranking officials, and experts from Romania and Moldova to stress that a strong justice system and anti‑corruption fight are essential for Moldova’s EU integration. Speakers highlighted Romania’s post‑accession monitoring model as a concrete example for Moldova, noting that without robust institutions the state’s security and European path are at risk.

A key focus of the reform agenda is the vetting of judges and prosecutors, a process that checks the ethical and financial integrity of magistrates. Carolina Bagrin, programme director of Moldova’s Legal Resources Centre, explained that vetting is critical for democratising the state and restoring public confidence in the judiciary. Officials such as former DNA chief Crin Bologa, former Moldovan prime minister Dorin Recean, and Justice Minister Vladislav Cojuhari underscored the need for continuous reforms and an independent, accountable judicial system as foundations for a resilient, EU‑aligned Moldova.
