Moldova economy remains driven by agricultural exports

Moldova continues to maintain an agrarian-based economy, with agro-industrial products and food serving as its primary export categories. According to World Trade Organization data, Moldova's total merchandise exports reached $3.88 billion in 2025, ranking the country 133rd out of 189 nations.

After three consecutive years of decline, agro-food exports have shown signs of recovery. Economic expert Veaceslav Ioniță noted that following a drop from approximately €1.94 billion to €1.39 billion, exports grew by roughly €400 million starting in the third quarter of 2025, reaching €1.79 billion. This growth has been driven largely by oilseeds, cereals, oils, and fruits.

However, the agricultural sector faces significant challenges due to climate change and increasing droughts. Experts suggest that Moldovan farmers must shift their approaches toward soil moisture conservation, crop rotation, and the adoption of more advanced, climate-adapted technologies to ensure long-term resilience.
