Moldova and EU launch new crisis preparedness and civil protection initiatives

crisis management civil protection disaster preparedness Moldova Pregătită European Union

The Moldovan government has announced the launch of 'Moldova Pregătită', an annual national program designed to enhance the ability of households and communities to respond to various crises. Coordinated by the National Crisis Management Center (CNMC), the initiative aims to foster a national culture of preparedness similar to Scandinavian models. The first edition, titled 'The First 72 Hours', is set to debut in November 2026 and will provide citizens with family guides, checklists, and information kits to manage the immediate aftermath of emergencies.

Concurrently, the European Union is implementing a civil protection campaign titled 'Act as One: We prepare today. Ready for tomorrow.' This initiative, which includes Romania and will run through December 2026, focuses on disaster prevention and cross-border solidarity. The campaign comes in response to increasing extreme weather events, noting that vegetation fires affected over 669,000 hectares in Europe in 2026 and that annual economic losses from flooding in the EU are estimated at 8.6 billion euros.
