Moldova and Hungary discuss EU accession and regional security

Moldovan President Maia Sandu met with Hungarian President András Baka and Prime Minister Péter Magyar in Budapest to discuss Moldova’s European integration. The leaders welcomed the opening of four negotiation clusters this year and discussed the necessary steps to open the remaining two clusters.

The discussions emphasized that European Union enlargement serves as an investment in the security of the entire Union. Beyond EU accession, the parties addressed economic cooperation, energy diversification, regional interconnection, and the expansion of direct flights between Chisinau and Budapest.

Regional security was a central theme, specifically regarding Ukraine’s resilience and Russian hybrid threats, including repeated violations of Moldovan airspace by Russian drones and missiles. This visit marks Sandu’s first official trip to Hungary, where she also attended commemorations for the 70th anniversary of the 1956 anti-communist revolution.
