Romanian teachers to stage parliamentary protest with 160,000 signatures demanding education law changes
The three main teachers' federations – FSLI, FSE Spiru Haret and FNS Alma Mater – representing over 300,000 education employees, will protest in front of the Romanian Parliament on 25 June 2026. They will submit more than 160,000 collected signatures supporting a citizen‑initiated amendment of Laws no. 198/2023 and 199/2023 and the repeal of provisions introduced by Law no. 141/2025, which they label “anti‑education”. The draft measures call for a maximum of 22 pupils per class in primary schools and 26 in secondary schools, a return to the former system of hourly pay and teaching load, a two‑hour reduction in the workload for teachers with grade I and over 25 years of service, and a non‑taxable installation bonus equal to three basic salaries for teachers who take posts in isolated or disadvantaged areas. Other proposals include separating the 8th‑grade class, granting scholarships equal to a debut teacher’s net salary to dual‑specialisation teacher‑training students, and maintaining elite student scholarships for international competition medalists throughout university studies. Union leaders urged parliamentarians to debate the initiative urgently so that the 2026‑27 school year can start under improved conditions. "Prin acest demers legislativ solicităm anularea prevederilor anti‑educaţie distructive impuse prin Legea nr. 141/2025," they said, adding, "Facem un apel către parlamentarii… pentru a discuta în regim de urgenţă".
