Moldova and Romania thwart illegal crossing of four migrants

On May 18‑19, 2026, Moldovan border police and Romanian authorities jointly intercepted four migrants attempting to cross the Prut River at the Drepcăuţi‑Horodişte checkpoint.

The operation, coordinated by the Moldovan Police Direction Regional North, the Edineț prosecutor’s office, the Special Border Actions Unit, and the Romanian Rădăuţi‑Prut Border Police, stopped the group, which had been assisted by a criminal network. Investigators identified three Nepali citizens aged 30‑35 and a 31‑year‑old suspect detained earlier near Drepcăuţi. The migrants were apprehended before reaching Romanian territory; the investigation into the smuggling ring continues.
