Moldova and Turkey discuss economic cooperation and investment

Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan met with the new Turkish Ambassador to Moldova, Nazmiye Başaran, to discuss deepening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation. The discussions focused on attracting Turkish investments, particularly within the renewable energy sector, and the potential organization of a new meeting for the Moldovan-Turkish Intergovernmental Commission for Economic Cooperation.

Trade relations between the two nations are showing significant growth. In the first half of 2026, bilateral trade reached $638.7 million, a nearly 13% increase compared to the same period last year. Moldovan exports to Turkey rose by 36% to $260.6 million, following a total bilateral trade volume that exceeded $1.1 billion in 2025.

The officials also addressed educational cooperation, specifically regarding the Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Moldovan-Turkish College in Comrat and initiatives to support the study of Gagauz and Romanian languages. The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of constructive dialogue focused on economic development, infrastructure, and job creation in the Gagauzia region.
