Ukraine seeks EU aid as grain transit through Moldova sparks farmer concerns

Ukraine has requested a 220 million euro subsidy from the European Union to assist its farmers, who are struggling due to Russian military attacks and drought. The European Commission is currently analyzing Ukraine's harvest volumes, storage capacities, and export logistics—including Black Sea routes and Solidarity Lanes—before deciding on further support measures.

Simultaneously, a new agreement between Ukraine and Moldova has introduced a 50% reduction in railway transit tariffs for Ukrainian agricultural goods, effective from August 10 through the end of 2026. While Moldovan authorities suggest this will attract significant transit volume and revenue, local agricultural associations, including Agrocereale and Forța Fermierilor, have raised alarms. They warn that the increased transit could cause railway infrastructure congestion, limit access to wagons and terminals for Moldovan producers, and depress domestic grain prices.
