Moldova approves 2026 budget rectification with rising deficit
The Moldovan government has approved a rectification of the 2026 state budget, projecting a deficit of 23.07 billion lei, which represents approximately 5.95% of the country's GDP. Under the new estimates, revenues are projected at 80.27 billion lei against expenditures of 103.35 billion lei. Prime Minister Tofan noted the need to cover additional costs, including energy compensations and single payments for public sector employees such as teachers and police. To address these needs, transfers to the social insurance budget will increase by 1.6 billion lei, and 560 million lei will be allocated for single payments to budget sector employees with average monthly salaries not exceeding 20,000 lei.
Additionally, the Cabinet approved a draft law to increase mandatory medical assistance insurance funds (FAOAM) for 2026 by 167.4 million lei for both revenues and expenditures. These funds are intended to expand access to hospital services, rehabilitation, dialysis, radiotherapy, and palliative care. Much of the increase will support acute case treatments and surgical procedures.
In Romania, the government has approved emergency aid totaling 2.18 million lei for 479 families and individuals facing difficult circumstances, such as fires, landslides, or serious health issues. Furthermore, financial rewards will be granted to students achieving perfect scores on national evaluations and baccalaureate exams.
