Moldovan Constitutional Court upholds party‑limitation law amid criticism from opposition leader Irina Vlah

On 30 June 2026, the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Moldova rejected three petitions challenging the constitutionality of provisions in the Parties Law that allow the Ministry of Justice to request a court to limit or dissolve a political party deemed to have ties to a party declared unconstitutional. The Court confirmed that the measures—including temporary activity restrictions of up to 12 months—are legal and precise, citing the need to protect electoral processes from subversive activities.

Opposition leader Irina Vlah, president of the Republican Party “Inima Moldovei”, denounced the ruling as “strange”, “anti‑democratic” and contrary to the Venice Commission’s advice, warning that it threatens political pluralism and could shift Moldova toward an authoritarian regime. Court President Domnica Manole emphasized that the criteria are based on concrete facts such as party programs and public statements and that the restrictions are temporary.
