Moldova authorities seize 127 containers in smuggling probe
Moldovan customs officials and the Prosecutor's Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Cases (PCCOCS) have uncovered a smuggling scheme involving 127 maritime containers. The containers, which include both new and used units, were reportedly imported from Ukraine and the European Union starting in January 2025.
Investigators allege that the suspects failed to declare the true purpose of the imports, claiming the containers were only for temporary use to avoid paying a 20% import tax. The estimated value of the goods exceeds 4 million lei. Instead of remaining in the country temporarily, the containers were allegedly sold for profit and later offered for rent as storage spaces.
Authorities conducted ten searches in Chișinău and other localities, seizing the containers, mobile phones, and various documents. Four individuals between the ages of 40 and 60 are currently under investigation; three are transporters and one represents the company that purchased the containers. All suspects remain at liberty under the presumption of innocence as the investigation continues.
