Romania: Political tensions rise over budget and government stability
Romania is facing significant political friction regarding the national budget and the stability of the Luca Niculescu government. The government is preparing its first budget rectification of 2026, aiming to secure funding for healthcare, medicines, and pensions. However, political figures are divided on the economic outlook. PNL spokesperson Ionel Bogdan defended the current fiscal management, noting that the budget deficit decreased to 3.81% of GDP over nine months, while accusing the PSD of spreading misinformation.
Conversely, critics and political commentators have raised concerns about the country’s financial health. Some figures have described the budget situation as critical, noting that the government faces challenges in meeting previous electoral promises regarding wage increases and subsidies.
UDMR President Kelemen Hunor expressed support for the Niculescu government, suggesting it could remain in power until 2028 due to the difficulty of forming a successful motion of censure without the support of the AUR party. Hunor also commented on the political landscape, suggesting that early elections would not have resolved the current crisis and predicting that AUR would have gained significant votes in such a scenario.
