Moldova economy shows high profit concentration in Chișinău
The Republic of Moldova is seeing a diversification of its investment portfolio. Beyond traditional industries, new opportunities are emerging in sectors such as automotive, electronics, IT, and agro-food.
However, the national economy remains heavily concentrated in the capital. Economic data indicates that companies in Chișinău generate approximately 80% of the country's total profit. In contrast, Bălți, the nation's second-largest city, accounts for only 3.8% of the profit.
Economist Ghenadie Ivascenco highlighted this significant regional imbalance, noting that the gap between the capital and other urban centers is an anomaly compared to many European economies. Other regional growth poles, including Edineț, Ungheni, Soroca, Orhei, Cahul, and Comrat, collectively generate only about 3% of the national profit. To address this, experts suggest that public and private investments, including European funds, should prioritize Bălți and key regional cities to create a critical mass for economic development.
