Moldova explores four‑day work week model inspired by Iceland

Experts say a four‑day work week can keep output levels while improving employee well‑being. The Icelandic experiment showed higher performance, reduced burnout and lower operating costs for employers. In Moldova, some companies have begun adopting the schedule, particularly in sectors such as IT and consulting that can flexibly adjust workloads.

Labour law specialist Cristina Fleștor explained that firms can maintain salaries while cutting the workweek, provided they optimise processes and have sufficient technology. She noted benefits including lower absenteeism, better mental health and energy savings. However, Fleștor cautioned that industries requiring constant service—hospitality, health care and public services—may find implementation difficult.

Moldovan firms are testing reduced hours for Fridays or shorter days, and the discussion is shaping broader policy considerations about work‑time flexibility in the country.
