Moldova faces AC affordability crisis amid intensifying European heatwaves

Rising temperatures across Europe are prompting a surge in demand for residential air‑conditioning, but the high cost of units keeps the technology out of reach for millions. In Moldova, officials highlighted the issue while announcing a memorandum of understanding signed in autumn 2025 with two U.S. firms, Small Business Consulting Corporation and Wheeler Machinery Co., to develop a 100 MW natural‑gas power plant aimed at strengthening the national grid.

The Ministry of Energy noted that the limited access to cooling solutions exacerbates household discomfort during increasingly frequent and severe heatwaves, contrasting with the near‑90 % penetration of air‑conditioning in the United States. The new plant is presented as a step toward more reliable electricity supply, though the broader challenge of affordable cooling persists for many Moldovan families.
