Moldova faces water supply risks as Prut and Nistru river levels drop
Low water levels in the Prut River are threatening the water supply for 11 localities in Moldova, including the town of Leova. Environment Minister Gheorghe Hajder announced that authorities have intervened to assess the situation and implement technical solutions to secure the water intake station, ensuring stable supply even as river levels continue to drop.
Hydrologists have issued warnings for several rivers across the country. The Prut River, specifically the Criva-Costești sector, remains under an orange alert, with flow estimated at 30% or less. The Nistru River is also facing a critical situation, with reports indicating significantly reduced water levels in areas near Soroca. The Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring Authority (AMM) has updated its hydrological warnings, noting that reduced water flow is expected to persist across most Moldovan rivers through at least October 9.
