Moldova fuel price hikes to generate 1 billion lei in extra VAT
Rising fuel prices in Moldova are expected to generate over 1 billion lei in additional VAT revenue for the national budget. According to estimates by economist Veaceslav Ioniță, the increase in gasoline and diesel prices between March and September could result in approximately 1.026 billion lei in supplementary VAT.
Diesel is the primary driver of this trend, accounting for nearly 86% of the total additional revenue due to higher consumption and a more pronounced increase in the fiscal component per liter. While the VAT rate remains unchanged, the total amount paid by consumers increases alongside the product price.
For example, gasoline prices rose from approximately 22 lei per liter at the start of the year to over 34 lei. Diesel prices nearly doubled, climbing from roughly 19 lei to almost 37 lei per liter. This price surge significantly increases the tax burden per fuel tank for consumers.
