Moldova sees record maritime and service exports amid Danube logistics issues
Moldova is experiencing a significant shift in its economic landscape. The country has reached a record volume for maritime exports in 2026, with 1.64 million tons shipped through its ports in the first nine months. This growth is primarily driven by the cereal sector, particularly wheat, which accounts for 51% of all water-based exports.
However, logistical challenges are mounting. Low water levels in the Danube have restricted vessel loading capacities, forcing exporters to use nearly twice as many ships to transport the same volumes. Additionally, congestion at the Giurgiulești port and pilot availability are causing delays.
In contrast to the surge in goods, Moldova's service exports have also hit a record high of $3.53 billion, representing a 23.3% increase over the last 12 months. This growth is fueled by IT services, transport, and business services, with the service sector's contribution to GDP showing strong upward momentum.
