Moldova Justice Ministry urges rejection of Gagauzia electoral law amendment

The Ministry of Justice has prepared an opinion urging the Moldovan government not to support a draft law submitted by the People's Assembly of Gagauzia that seeks to amend the national Electoral Code. The proposal would create a new "Central Electoral Commission of Gagauzia", redefine the competencies of Chisinau's electoral authorities and the regional body, and establish separate mechanisms for organising regional elections and referendums.

The ministry argues that the current code already embeds the Gagauz Electoral Council within the national electoral system, and that replacing it with a parallel commission would generate overlapping authority, normative conflicts and difficulties in applying the law uniformly. It also notes the draft lacks an assessment of the financial impact on the autonomous region's budget and therefore recommends that the government reject the amendment.
