Moldova launches parliamentary probe as authorities warn of SMS fraud targeting citizens

The Electronic Governance Agency (AGE) has warned Moldovan citizens of a new SMS fraud scheme that pretends to be the government service EVO. Victims receive messages claiming an EVO login and are urged to call a listed number; the messages are not sent by AGE and aim to obtain personal, banking or OTP data. Authorities advise people not to call the numbers, not to share passwords or codes, and to report suspicious SMSes via the national cyber‑crime portal or directly to EVO.

In response to the rise in phone‑based scams, the Moldovan Parliament has created a special investigative commission. Parliamentary data show that in 2025, Moldovans suffered losses exceeding 270 million lei from online fraud. The commission will examine the scope of the problem and recommend measures to protect consumers.
