Moldova Parliament approves draft law for military retirees

The Moldovan Parliament has approved a draft law in its first reading aimed at adjusting the regulatory framework in the defense sector. The legislation introduces several new provisions for retired military personnel.

Under the proposed rules, military members who have earned pension rights may sign new service contracts for terms of up to five years, an increase from the previous two-year limit. Additionally, military personnel retired at the age limit who live alone in service housing will no longer face eviction. The law also stipulates that contract military personnel retired at the age limit and entitled to a pension will be exempt from paying the remaining value of military equipment.

Furthermore, the project proposes extending the period for applying disciplinary sanctions from six to 12 months from the date of the offense. To optimize the chain of command and control, the Defense General Staff is to be institutionalized as a distinct central structure, separating operational military leadership from the administrative and logistical duties of the Ministry of Defense. This move is intended to reduce the risk of parallel decision-making during crisis situations.
