Moldova Parliament votes to reform Constitutional Court judge selection

The Parliament of Moldova has voted in the first reading on a draft law aimed at increasing transparency and extending the selection process for Constitutional Court judges. Under the proposed changes, the selection process would begin three months before a current judge's mandate expires, and the total duration of the procedure would be extended from 45 days to three months.

The new regulations include a public evaluation phase where candidates' CVs will be published, allowing civil society, the media, and interested parties to provide documented information regarding their eligibility and integrity. Additionally, candidates will undergo public interviews, and the final selection results will be made public.

The initiative was developed by Veronica Roșca, president of the Legal, Appointments, and Immunities Committee, incorporating recommendations from the Venice Commission and experts from the European Commission. The project now awaits a second reading in Parliament.
